Mustafa Khokhar claims Zardari suffered a “minor heart attack”

Mustafa Khokhar, the minister in charge of human rights, confirmed on Wednesday that the president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari suffered a minor heart attack earlier this week but he is in good health now and will soon return to Islamabad.

Khokhar also confirmed that the Pakistan President had undergone a minor heart surgery in Dubai. The minister also turned down the reports that Zardari might step down from his role following the memo scandal embroiling the president of Pakistan and former
Pakistan Ambassador to United States, Hussain Haqqani.

"He had a minor heart attack on Tuesday. He flew to Dubai where he had an angioplasty. He’s in good health now. He will come back tomorrow. There’s no question of any resignation," said Mustafa Khokhar, the minister in charge of human rights on Wednesday.

The latest statement of Khokhar contradicts with the statement of presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar, who had earlier said that Mr. Zardari had gone to Dubai to meet his children where he will also undergo a planned medical check up.

State media said that Pakistan president was accompanied by his physicians and personal staff, and that the medical tests of Zardari were routine, linked to a "previously diagnosed cardiovascular condition".

Zardari had been under immense pressure since Mansoor Ijaz leaked a confidential memo in which the Pakistan president had sought assistance from American president against Pakistan army. Another main character of the memo scandal was Hussain Haqqani, the
former Pakistan envoy to US, who was allegedly given the task of taking the memo to the American higher authorities.

The presidency as well as the government of Pakistan has been denying the accusations from the first day. Last Sunday, President Zardari had announced that he would soon address a joint session of parliament, but on Tuesday he left for Dubai in emergency
raising many eyebrows in the political circles of Pakistan.
