Parliamentary Committee on National Security seeks details of US compacts

As Pakistan is rethinking its ties with the United State, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security has asked the government to share details of all compacts and agreements with America, that permits her to operate inside the country.

The Parliamentary panel, which met with its Chairman, Mian Raza Rabbani, in the chair for the third time after the NATO attack, sought details of the verbal and written agreements made with the US.

It is worth highlighting here that the parliamentary panel was given a mandate to devise its suggestions on new provisions of engagement with America in the war on terror.

While speaking to the media after the meeting, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani stated that the panel will summon the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs in the upcoming meeting, to be held on December 13, 2011.

The ministries will be asked to brief the committee in terms of working agreements with the United States.

Rabbani further stated that the panel will summon all the concerned parties to determine the facts surrounding the NATO attacks. He clarified that the committee will express its recommendations according to the parliamentary resolutions.

It is pertaining to mention here that parliamentarians reportedly expressed reservations on the compacts and deals under which the Americans and their allied forces violate the Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity.

The Chairman underlined, “The panel will give its recommendations after discussing agreements and assurances given by the government to the Americans and NATO”.

In the next phase, a joint session of the parliament will be summoned to approve the committee’s recommendations.

Replying to a query, Rabbani told the media that it is completely up to the government, whether to present the suggestions in the joint session to be addressed by the President Asif Ali Zardari, or summon a separate session for solely this function.

In an equivalent move, the parliamentary panel made a decision on a broader agenda to probe the issue of secret memogate. The controversial memo that sparked all circles in the country allegedly asked the US to help Pakistan’s civilian government in case
army takes over the country.

Commenting on the memo issue, the Senator stated that soon they will make a strategy to investigate the controversial scandal. It is also relevant to write it here that Rabbani held a meeting with Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and the PPP Chairman,
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, briefing them on the decisions taken by the panel.
