A friendly gesture from Nawaz Sharif
Saturday, December 10th, 2011 4:03:46 by Faisal FarooqA friendly gesture from Nawaz Sharif
At time when media and some sections of political oppositions are making speculations about the coup threats, PML-N Quaid, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif gave a dispassionate analysis about what is really at stake.
Despite holding one of the largest political parties, he made it clear that continued rumours and insinuation could invite an extra-constitutional intervention by the military. He dispelled every type of doubts saying that he or his party would not support
any undemocratic move.
In clear-cut words, he underlined that the duly elected representatives have only right to run the country, dismissing the ideas of Bangladesh model and technocrats’ setup.
It sounds really good when Mian Nawaz Sharif is asking the nation to stand unite against a military takeover. In his view, the country cannot afford anymore martial law.
The statement of Nawaz Sharif indicates that he learned much from the history that is why he is showing political maturity. Without any doubt, the opposition’s right to differ the government polices is lawful under a democratic setup. However, it should
be exercised within the limits and bounds of democracy.
His analysis is welcome gesture in an alarming situation that has gripped the country in the past few days.
Despite many people called him for a prompt ending of the PPP-led government, Nawaz Sharif displayed a commendable consistency in his support for the democracy, since he returned in the country.
A couple of points are significant to understand the situation even they are not new but should be ingeminated.
One of those two is that military does not have capability to pull the country out of crises. Four dictators have attempted to do so, but to no avail. There is no logical reason that the fifth one will be succeeded to in their objectives.
One cannot question commitment and capability of the saviours, but they did not have political legitimacy.
Second one is that the civilians will have to enhance their control over the game with better performance, if they are to be provided enough time to do so. Unfortunately, the reality is that domestically dominant army holds the power what civilians should
have it.
It will be unrealistic that army will relinquish the power regardless of civilians’ performances. The threat to democracy will never really fade away until the political leadership develops the ability to deliver better outcomes.
