Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich: A bold step from Samsung and Google – Part 2
Saturday, December 10th, 2011 3:32:12 by Usman KhalidThe new ICS is a much better improvement from Gingerbread but there is still a steep learning curve that will keep the customers on their toes for some time. There is lack of integration between various phone features, in terms of gestures and outlook.
The calling feature distantly resembles with the home screen in features, gestures and skin. Although the phonebook is marvellously integrated with Facebook and email accounts, it still lacks in integration with the neighbour, the home screen.
The menus have been overhauled splendidly and the function of dragging and dropping icons on each other to create a new home screen works exceptionally. However, again the new gestures in this regard are such a bold and long jump from the predecessors that
it is hard to learn it.
Even the presence of state-of-the-art hardware there is some stutter in navigating through the menus.
There is not mass storage mode in the phone although Google remembered to add the webcam and multimedia modes in it. Moreover, the phone has fixed memory at 16 GB in European models and 32 GB in the US phones. Both versions lack external memory. The US version
is still to hit the market but there will be no change in the hardware or operating system other than the storage capacity.
The most astonishing feature in the phone is Android Beam that takes its ratings a notch up. This feature works on Bluetooth and streams web pages, Youtube videos, pictures and contacts/messages to another compatible devices; in this case, another Nexus
phone.
There is a proximity sensor at the back of the phone that detects another Nexus attached to its back and automatically switches to the Beam mode, provided NFC mode is turned on. With a single tap on the screen the content is transferred to the other phone
instantly.
This feature no doubt is mind blowing but is the only thing that takes the handheld up a notch in ratings. Other specs are undoubtedly latest but still are insufficient to fulfil the hunger of a premium phone.
