Oppressive Police System: A Barrier In The Way Of Civilised Pakistan
Saturday, December 10th, 2011 7:13:01 by Sharjeel AhmadSmooth functioning of a social set-up heavily depends upon rule of law. Without it, nothing positive is possible. In Pakistan, exacerbated law and order situation is the main reason of a number of problems we are forced to live with. There is no protection
for human life, property and honour. Any person can be killed, robbed, kidnapped or beaten at any time anywhere. No other but our flawed police system is responsible for this mess which has retarded our progress both in terms of economy and ethics.
Police, which is considered to be the basis tier of the justice system, badly lacks in discipline and moral values. When you are a policeman, you are not liable to pay bills on restaurants, stand in queues to wait for your turn, pay transport fair, respect
anyone’s self-esteem, follow any law and act as a responsible citizen; as all these things fall in the list of your ‘privileges’.
No one bothers that a large number of immaculate Pakistanis are killed in fake police encounters every year, many innocent citizens are waiting for deaths in torture cells of our jails and a huge amount of honestly-earned money is taken as bribery. What
a hell this is!
When you, unfortunately, happen to visit a police station, the policemen behave rudely and deal savagely. They are absolutely unaware of the human ethics. They consider themselves to be the crownless kings. They cannot be ready to even listen your voice
unless you grease their palms.
When a murder takes place, the local police authorities make merry to have found an easy and lucrative source of income. Both the aggrieved and guilty parties had to shower ample of money on the policemen to get the matter resolved. In the end, no justice
is given.
The gruesome reality is that our entire police system from top to bottom is defective and imperfect. There is no accountability on it. No one from political administration thinks of ensuring transparency in it, rather our politicians use this system to get
their heinous interests and unfair advantages.
In order to cope with this oppressive system, our people seek unfair means and unlawful shortcuts. Thus, the whole society falls prey to corruption.
In the end, I would like to add one thing more. Our police set-up is too old-fashioned and orthodox. It does not have capacity to go with the tide. In this era of science and technology, a number of effective and fast policing methods are in use across the
globe but we do not bother to adopt them.
Any political or human rights leader, who aims at perking up Pakistan, must start from the police system. Unless it is overhauled, no change is possible here.
