PIA sinks further; losses exceed Rs. 100 billion
Saturday, December 10th, 2011 3:54:37 by Farhan HameedNational flag carrier of the country, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), keeps bleeding heavy losses for the current fiscal year. The accumulative losses for the company have reached a staggering Rs. 100 billion as the airlines
keeps sinking towards a point of no return.
In a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence, held at the Parliament House on Friday, it was revealed that the national flag carrier is leaking out heavy losses on continuous basis. The meeting was chaired
by MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur and he was further informed that new aircrafts will be put into operation in the PIA during March-April next year.
The committee was appraised on PIA’s overall working and the recent Haj operations. The chairman was told that pilgrims were treated as international passengers and the waiting time at airport for travelling to Saudi Arabia was
reduced to six hours this year. The PIA presented to the chairman of the meeting the certificate of appreciation awarded to them by CAA of Saudi Arabia on their performance during Haj 2011.
The PIA officials remained adamant that everything the media has currently portrayed was not true and things are much better then they appear. They admitted that there is plenty of room for improvement in the company but PIA has
not gone to a pint of no return as yet. They burst out at the media for manipulating the true facts about PIA and tarnishing the image of the national flag carrier.
The managing director of PIA apologized for his statement reported in the media that “Pilgrims should be thankful for traveling in aircraft rather on camels.”
The members of the committee emphasized that negotiations to improve the arrangements for Haj next year must be started with the authorities in Saudi Arabia right way, so that no complains are received from the pilgrims next time.
PIA was also asked about the implementation status of previous recommendations of the committee. The members stressed for results and it was decided that another meeting of the standing committee will be convened on December 23,
in which the secretary of Defence and managing director of PIA will submit a performance report.
