Google launched YouTube EDU for school-level viewers
Tuesday, December 13th, 2011 5:46:09 by Usman KhalidGoogle wants to avoid concerns about the contents on their website, YouTube. The company has been preventing school students from accessing the questionable material with account holder-access only but still there are objection raised on the limited access.
They are on the verge of launching a school-level YouTube extension, YouTube EDU, that will solely cater the aforesaid demographic.
As explained in a blog, where the new service was presented to the public in a beta-demo, the company explained the ideology behind such addition to the largest video-oriented social network.
The reason, as explained by the authorities, is the misuse of YouTube content that is not suitable for minors. School authorities have blocked the use of YouTube for video references to academic content.
"Schools can customize the content that can be accessed. All schools can access the entire contents of YouTube EDU, but teachers and administrators will have access to YouTube.com and can create playlists of videos that will be available," Google said on
the blog.
Teachers and administrators of schools will have access to YouTube.com and will be able to watch videos, but students will not have access to the site and will only view videos on YouTube EDU. All comments and related videos will be turned off and research
will be limited to available videos on the EDU.
300 schools have prepared playlists of videos that can be accessed in the academia. The blog showed a demo video in which a teacher entered a classroom and gave the students access to YouTube EDU, which will have limited access to the created playlists only.
This will also help students to focus on the related material rather than get distracted by related videos.
Google remembers that there are all kinds of YouTube videos, but restricted access to just related-material will help boast good learning.
Schools must register on YouTube under the academic section to avail the EDU services which includes rights and permissions to client users and playlist facilities to teachers.
