Yes, you heard it right. Most of the people in the world recognise NASA for its research and development work in space but recently they have showed their lighter side to the world by starting an internet radio, which plays rock ‘n’ roll. This is the new
appealing tactic of the space agency, which is being used to attract the young adults to join NASA. They have launched the radio under the name of “Third Rock-American’s Space Station. They are currently offering careers to aspiring young people with the debut
of internet radio station.
In order to set up the new entertainment portal for listeners, they collaborated with RFC Media in Houston and aired the live transmission on Monday, December 12. The first session featured some modern rock, indie, and alternative music.
The NASA radio is now available online. The official websites of RFC and NASA have all the information regarding Third Rock. Furthermore, the other advertisers are also promoting the radio link. As for as the programming is concerned, initially they will
put more focus on emerging music, which gets less air-play on the other mainstream music channels.
NASA already has mobile applications for iPhones and Android smartphone platforms. Hence, it has plans to make Third Rock available for people through those applications. NASA also used crowd sourcing to find out which songs would wake up astronauts on one
of the last flights of its Space Shuttle program last year.
David Weaver, the associate administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications, stated: "NASA constantly is looking for new and innovative ways to engage the public and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. NASA has been one of the government’s
innovators in leveraging new technology to communicate with its audience.”
Another post on NASA’s blog said: “Just like a healthy scientific curiosity leads to great discoveries in technology, a good musical curiosity is constantly leading us to great New Rock, which we will immediately share with you.”
The Radio will also be used for other purposes of broadcasting different information and updates on NASA’s new discoveries and missions. The most exciting feature is that Third Rock is offering people to fill high tech jobs in engineering, science and IT
fields.
