The Secret Life of the American Teenager (often referred as the Secret Life) is an American Teen drama television series created by Brenda Hampton with a running time of approximately forty-five minutes. Season one was aired on July 1^st, 2008
and currently at its fourth season.

Secret Life centres on the relationship of teenagers. It looks at how teens at a California high school struggle with decisions about relationships. One young girl, Amy Jurgens (starred by Shailene Woodley) finds herself pregnant and story goes on how she
deals with the problems she faced.

The series received mixed or average reviews.

The review aggregator Metacritic gave a score of 47 out of 100 based on 15 critics.

The New York Post praised the series for having a set of characters that are, “"… real and come from families of all stripes – from intact to single-parent households to one boy in foster care…"

The New York Times claimed that ‘Secret Life’ must surely be the collective effort of an anti-pregnancy cabal. It also stated that ABC family took fun out of teenage pregnancy and called the show a “Prime Time Cautionary Tale”.

Variety Magazine declared, "ABC Family’s latest original drama wants to be a slow-motion version of "Juno" but settles for being an obvious, stereotype-laden teen soap […] based on first impressions, "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" should probably
stay a secret."

The creator of this interesting teen’s tale ignored the negative reviews and said, "I’d rather get good ratings and bad reviews than bad ratings and good reviews".

Regardless of these poor reviews, Secret Life received the highest premier viewership ratings ever for an ABC Family original program. The first episode brought in 2.82 million viewers and a 0.9/3 share in the 18-49 year old demographic. It also scored high
in the female demographic, earning a 6.5/24 among female teenagers and a 3.1/11 among 12-34 year old females.

In addition to this, Secret Life’s mid season finale of season one tumbled over the much-publicised series premier of 90210 on The CW in viewers. It battled past 90210 in viewers 12-34 and females 12-34, beating 90210 in total viewers and brought in some
of the best ratings of the season for Secret Life.

Secret Life is one of the best teenage drama series and should be on everyone’s radar. Parents should confront their children to watch this show and to learn from it as well.
