There are some who believe Google is taking over the world with its monopoly on all things internet. Maybe they’re right, but Google is just so darn cool! A large part of the reason for Google’s continued success is that the company always seems to have
its finger on the pulse of not only what web users need but always what they want. As a freelance writer, this is a fact that can be easily leveraged to make your work more streamlined.
You’re probably thinking, "That’s nice, but what does that really mean to me?" Google is the only product platform that allows you to easily interface your email (Gmail), photo sharing (Picasa), video sharing (YouTube), blog (Blogger), RSS feeds (FeedBurner),
and monetization (AdSense) using one account. If you login to one of these Google-owned services, you can choose how to use the features of that service in order to enhance another, to make file distribution and self-publication easy, monitor and build traffic,
set up subscriptions to your photos, videos, and blog, and keep track of click-through and ad-related statistics.
If you run a blog, you can set your Google-hosted Blogger site to publish to your own dot com for a low fee of $10 a year through GoDaddy.com. Google configures it all for you automatically. There are no additional hosting accounts needed, you can configure
your AdSense settings directly from your blog, you can set up RSS feeds and subscriptions through Google-owned FeedBurner, and Blogger offers more than enough features and options for most bloggers needs. Because many bloggers use Blogger.com to host their
websites, you can view your blog subscriptions from your login page for easy blogger to blogger networking.
You can run Picasa photo uploading/editing software from your computer. This allows people to enhance, crop, resize and save your images to your computer. When you’re done, upload them to Picasa web from the software program. Picasa web creates photo
albums which you can make public, share by invite only, or make completely private. It also generates links for embedding images to your website that you can cut and paste and allows you to choose the image size. This is a handy tool if you aren’t familiar
with writing your own code. You can download Picasa for your PC or Mac for free.
Google’s online empire keeps growing and becoming more and more user-friendly. Who knows what additional free services will be available in the near future?
There are many other solutions that are available to freelancers. For purely self-employed, self-published writers or those new to the online writing game and don’t have a lot of technical savvy, however, there’s the Google way and there’s the hard way.
