As in previous years, the Goodwill Ambassadors of UNDP and football legends, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane have used the big names in football, retired or still active, Didier Drogba, Christian Karembeu, Fabio Cannavaro, Rabah Madjer or Dida, to play against German
team Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV) at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, December 13, 2011. The match will be the annual ‘Match against Poverty.”
"It’s encouraging to see so much solidarity and support to Africa from the fans around the world," said Ronaldo, who scored a goal in the second half of the match. "And also from the players of both teams, who took the time to go to Hamburg to support this
important cause."
"With the Match against Poverty 2011 in Hamburg we hope to be able to mobilize people and raise the necessary funds for the Horn of Africa," said Zidane, the sporting director of Real Madrid team.
"The Match against Poverty is much more than just a game, it is part of the global fight against poverty."
The bulk of the revenues collected will be allocated for the benefit of emergency in place to curb the current famine in the countries of the Horn of Africa.
Two-thirds of revenue from the match will be used for the benefit of the humanitarian and recovery effort in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The United Nations working in these countries to provide people an emergency food, water, shelter and health
services, while working on the implementation of development plans in the longer term.
Revenue from the eight previous editions of the Match against Poverty benefited projects in over 27 countries, including recent recovery efforts conducted in 2010 following the earthquake in Haiti and floods that have devastated Pakistan.
