Pakistan looking to revisit its foreign policy – Part Three

Continued from the previous part …
In the recent past, the US has been asking Pakistan to take a strong military action against the Haqqani Network in North Waziristan. However, the military establishment is against this operation because they have had good relations with the Haqqanis, who
are an integral part of Afghan Taliban. The reason why Pakistan is so reluctant to fulfill this demand of the US is its will of not to damage its ties with the Taliban as Pakistan wants to have a say in the future government of Afghanistan.
2011 has turned out to be a defining year of Pak-US relations because of a chain of incidents, which started in February with the Raymond Davis saga.
The next big event was the killing of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad on May 2. Even though there are still ambiguities about the whole episode but it was a major blow for the bilateral relations of America and Pakistan. Pakistan was put under immense world
pressure as the international players accused Pakistan of playing a double game with America.
Since then, on different platforms, the US has urged Pakistan to take a hard stance towards the Haqqani Network.
When all these tactics were being used by the US, the controversial memorandum issue was broken out by an American Citizen, Mansoor Ijaz, who in his column for Financial Times, alleged that the Ambassador of Pakistan in America, Hussain Haqqani gave him
a memo and asked him to deliver it to General Mike Mullen.
That memo had a lot of controversial things in it and naturally it caused a huge panic in the country. It remains to be seen that there is any truth behind this story or not but if it is true, the civil government of Pakistan Peoples Party may have to face
some terrible consequences. The matter is currently in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which is holding an inquiry of the matter. The Government of Pakistan has taken a resignation from Hussain Haqqani and he going to face a tough trial.
If all this was not enough to damage the relations between America and its biggest ally in the war of terror, icing was put on the cake when the NATO forces attacked the Salala check-post in Mahmand Agency and killed 24 Pakistan soldiers.
