In their reply to the Supreme Court, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and ISI Director, Lt Gen Shuja Pasha, stated that the secret memogate was a reality, terming it a conspiracy against the military.
The duo filed their replies to the apex court, which is hearing petitions related to the controversial memogate, calling for a thorough investigation about the matter. The two military men also blamed the former ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, for
the entire hullabaloo, and declaring the matter related to national security and integrity.
In their replies, they expressed satisfaction over the evidences provided by the Pakistani-origin US businessman, Mansoor Ijaz.
Both, Army Chief and ISI Director submitted their replies to the apex court through Attorney General of Pakistan, Molvi Anwalrul Haq, on Thursday.
General Kayani observed, “There may be a need to fully examine the facts and circumstances leading to conception and issuance of the memo has an impact on national security and attempts to lower the morale of Pakistan Army”.
ISI Director made a demand before the apex court, asking it to probe the entire matter thoroughly. He stated, “Access to unadulterated truth and justice is a right of the people of Pakistan, the real sovereign masters of this country”.
The controversy of secret memogate evolved on October 10, when Mansoor Ijaz wrote an article in the Financial Times, claiming that Hussain Haqqani sent a message to the US. In the secret memo, Haqqani asked the Americans to help the civilian government in
case of military coup after the May 02 incident.
Pasha asked the court to summon Mansoor Ijaz, who is hub of the entire controversy. He also requested the apex court to get access of the electronic gadgets being used by Hussain Haqqani and Mansoor Ijaz.
It is worth highlighting here that Mansoor Ijaz publicly offered to appear before any commission. The duo military men confirmed that they insisted the government to summon Haqqani following which Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani asked him to leave
the post.
In the reply, the army chief also revealed the explanations he received from the ISI Director regarding his meeting with the US businessman.
Kayani stated, “He (Ahmed Shuja Pasha) opined that the evidence shown to him by Mr Mansoor Ijaz was enough to establish that Mr Mansoor Ijaz remained in touch with Mr Hussain Haqqani from 9 May, 2011, onwards and exchanged numerous text messages and telephone
calls”.
