The Pakistan Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday asked the United States to respect his country’s red lines, its territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
Talking to the US envoy to Pakistan Mr. Cameron Munter, who had called on him at the Prime Minister House, Gilani said that Washington and Pentagon must guarantee there would be no breach of Pakistan’s border in future.
The Pakistan Prime Minister further told Munter that it was his prime responsibility to safeguard country’s dignity and honour and they cannot compromise on sovereignty of Pakistan under any circumstances.
Gilani further added that respect for sovereignty and non-repeat of one-sided actions across the Pak-Afghan border by the US led forces were the very minimum that Pakistan expected.
The PM also stressed upon close cooperation between Pakistan and US to fight against the menace of terrorism, the common enemy of the civilized world. He assured that Pakistan was ready to work with Washington to defeat the menace of terrorism, but not at
the cost of its national sovereignty and integrity.
Gilani maintained that Pakistan had been a great ally of United States in its decade long war against terror and nobody can question country’s integrity in this regard. He further added that the credit goes to the democratic government of Pakistan and that
the parliament was fully behind the government in this regard.
The Pakistan PM reiterated that Pakistan wants peace and stability in its war-hit neighboring country Afghanistan adding that an independent, prosperous and stable Afghanistan was in Pakistan’s long term interest. However, he did opine that no war can be
fought without the support of international community and public.
Munter said that in order to defeat the menace of terrorism, it is necessary that both the countries focus and cooperate with commitment and single-mindedness.
In the meanwhile, the American Congress has approved a legislation to freeze US$700 million aid to Islamabad until the country offers greater assurances that Pakistan has taken steps to contain the spread of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) against US-led
forces in Afghanistan.
