Hina Rabbani Khar brings 9 confidential agreements to light in Parliamentary committee briefing

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar briefed parliamentary committee about the 9 confidential agreements with United States, NATO, ISAF. The revision of foreign policy of Pakistan towards the US was announced after the NATO air strikes in Pakistan that killed
24 Pakistani soldiers.

These 9 agreements were kept in the dark for almost a decade; however, after the severe NATO attack on November 26, the government stopped NATO supplies as a protest against these air strikes. It also announced that the restriction on NATO supplies to Afghanistan
through Pakistan will stay in place until new term of agreement are agreed with the US.

It was revealed in the briefing that Pakistan’s ‘war on terror’ support with the US was based under these 9 agreements, out of which seven were related to defence and two regarding the foreign affairs.

The meeting was led by Senator Raza Rabbani while it was briefed by Hina Rabbani and the secretary of Defence Ministry. These pacts were signed under the regime of former President Pervez Musharraf.

The aim of the parliamentary committee on the national security (PNSC) was to review these policies and provide necessary recommendations to substantiate Pakistan’s cooperation with US in its ‘war on terror’

Rabbani told that relationship of Pakistan with US is currently “on hold” and it will move forward as soon as the parliament modifies these policy guidelines.

“It will be a partnership which has less grey areas, which has a clear mandate of the public and parliament of Pakistan; and therefore, we will be able to pursue this partnership much more vigorously,” she said.

“It will not only strengthen the space within the country or give us ownership of our foreign policy … but it will also strengthen the partnership that we pursue with any other country,” Hina added.

Khar was confident that these modifications will play a vital role in strengthening Pak-US relationships. She also told that Pakistan does not want to ruin its relationship with US but its sole aim is to strengthen the relationship.
