The Catholic Church and Sexual Abuse

A real track record of experts and religious leaders from Canada and around the world will hold a dialogue about their experiences and knowledge to better understand the crisis of sexual abuse by some clergy, and the challenges raised by this scandal. The
psychological, social, legal, spiritual and economic benefits for victims of sexual abuse crisis and the Catholic Church is a gravity deep. Pope Benedict XVI, speaking to the Irish church, claims that sexual abuse by clergy have hurt the Catholic faith with
a severity that even centuries of persecution have not reached. Sexual abuse of children remains a problem both for the deep and secret society. However, for various reasons, it is the Catholic Church which has become the typical case of sexual abuse of children
and adolescents in an institutional context. The crisis has generated a wealth of data and analysis – in terms of psychology, ethics, and law, as well as history and sociology. This conference aims to improve understanding of the phenomenon in order to learn
how to respond to trauma caused by abuse, and to better manage accountability of the institutional Church.

"The Centre for Research on Religion (CREOR) from McGill University, in partnership with many employees, held a conference in October about the crisis of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church: Trauma and transformation: The Catholic Church and the crisis
of sexual abuse (14-15, October 2011, McGill University)
However, for various reasons, it is the Catholic Church which has become the typical case of sexual abuse of children and adolescents in an institutional context. The crisis has generated a wealth of data and analysis – in terms of psychology, ethics, and law,
as well as history and sociology. This conference aims to improve understanding of the phenomenon in order to learn how to respond to trauma caused by abuse, and to better manage accountability of the institutional Church.
The conference will be a valuable opportunity for people and organizations that are concerned with issues of sexual abuse of children and adolescents in a religious context and institutional. It will meet most expectations of the laity, clergy and other leaders
working within communities and religious institutions, and the needs of the researcher (s) and professional (the) s in the fields of social work, law and public policy.
