When you enter www.youhavedownloaded.com, the first thing an Internet user gets is a note that gives the Internet IP address in a file. In the negative sense, it means that the user has not used BitTorrent or other P2P downloading software.
Continuing on the website, one is led to "feel free" and see what other activities have been performed from the detected IP. The site encourages to be shared among friends or downloading a widget to adding other websites.
The site tracks the traffic of this protocol and stores information, as well as location of the IP address, which is less clear in terms of internet dynamics. Obviously, identification of the IP addresses owner is not given, however it can be used to raise
controversy.
Identifying IP addresses that use BitTorrent is easy as they are exposed when downloaded files over unsecure internet protocols. The site claims to have more than 52 million addresses stored that are associated with 110,000 downloads.
In addition to this, the site has published a list of addresses and downloads and has a search window. If a website has the widget activated on it, visitors are welcomed with a "Good day pirate", "You love the torrents, is not it? Or at least someone in
your house does (…)”, or “And you’re sure not infringing any laws and have downloaded only legal stuff, is not it? " message.
Upon trying to remove your address from the list, a user is greeted with "You are brave enough to steal music or movies, but only because you think you will not be discovered?” and “Are you afraid that media companies find that you’re a pirate or let your
friends know exactly what you downloaded? (…) Internet is not a place to keep secrets."
The site has claimed that it is technically able to track private BitTorrent networks. The information they collect, as Numerama, can be used by advertising agencies to offer customized ads.
