Apple and Amazon planning on new tablets with different sizes
Saturday, December 17th, 2011 4:47:26 by Awais KhanWhat is the ideal size of a tablet? When it seemed that tablets should be of around 10 inches, Apple Inc. is preparing an iPad model with a screen size of 7.85 inches. The tablet is poised to begin production in second quarter of 2012.
Samsung have already experimented with a seven-inch tablet, but have reverted to the 10 inch model with the new version of Galaxy Tab.
The late Steve Jobs claimed that tablets should have a screen not larger than seven inches. The iPad is currently measured at 9.7 inches.
Apple’s project could be related to Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet that will have dimensions of seven inches. However, even the online store giant is not convinced about the appropriateness of its size and can launch tablet’s measuring 8.9 and 10.1 inches next
year.
The size of Kindle Fire was criticized by Nielsen Norman Group which specializes in usability. One thing they argued about was that an electronic book and a tablet have different uses.
After failure of similar projects by BlackBerry, Amazon is enjoying excellent Kindle sales. According to Amazon, they would be selling half a million units a week from December. The figure exceeds average sales of Apple’s tablet, which stand at more than
960,000 a month, although estimated figures for the holiday season have not been released.
On the other hand, Apple have introduced their cloud service, iTunes Match, in Spain. In U.S. the subscription price is $ 24.99 per year, which approximated to about 20 Euros. However, price for the Spanish service has been set at 24.99 Euros, making it
more expensive than in the states.
