How Zardari Dared to Bypass Military……………
Saturday, December 17th, 2011 3:17:55 by Sharjeel AhmadNature has blessed Pakistan President, Asif Ali Zardari, with some more years to live, but his political obituary is about to be written within a few days as Pakistan Army is not likely to spare him if the ongoing case of ‘Memogate’ scandal goes against
the incumbent government.
Irrespective of Pakistan’s history, culture and traditions, Zardari tried to break the idols to bring the Army under his thumb, but he was totally oblivious to the ground realities which do not allow a civilian politician to change the course of the country’s
foreign policy to his own.
One thing is obvious that the Army is a major component of our foreign policy making process and without its consent, no decision can be taken. This factor has a long historical perspective which everybody knows.
But Zardari, in collaboration with the Pakistan’s former ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, took a very daring step by writing to the American military leaders that General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani-led Army was going to dethrone the government of Pakistan
Peoples Party (PPP) which he also chairs. Apart from this, the controversial memo contained some other objections and allegations against the Army.
Thanks to the write-up of a US businessman, Mansoor Ijaz, the features of the memo were exposed to international media. It was shocking for the Army which took it as a matter of insult and pressed the civilian government to clarify its position.
In short, Zardari forced Haqqani to resign from his post and himself flew to Dubai to get ‘treatment for heart attack’ or some ‘brain problem’. He is still there, however, going to England reportedly.
The case is pending with the apex court and a final decision is expected in a few days. Currently, the entire country is awash with speculations and conspiracy theories. Most of the people and political experts believe that the government will have to step
down and fresh elections are to be held under the aegis of Army.
However, Kiani has shown no intention and interest to meddle into the political system. But one thing is clear, he will not let Zardari-led government rule more.
If this happens, it will have both positive and negative repercussion for the country. Positive in a sense that the flopped government will go and some other party, probably PML (N) will come to power. Negative in a sense that this incident will work as
a moral lesson for the future civilian governments which may think to make some independent decisions.
The atmosphere is charged and the situation is ripe for some big transition. Let us see what comes out from this Pandora box.
