To believe the warnings of Stephen Hawking, one might have to imagine Christopher Columbus discovering America, with the Earth in the role of Native Americans.
Scientist believe that the Aztec Empire in South America were the first ones to predict an attack from aliens, as they are also considered two thousand years ahead in terms of technology. Yet it took the Spanish conqueror, Cortez, only two years to conquer
them.
Assuming that a band of alien lands on Earth, we should imagine that a technological gap between them and us would be of a much greater magnitude too.
Alien life can be discovered though emissions but we do have to note that emissions are sporadic, and the probability that someone is in the right place to detect them are close to zero. Until we have developed a signal that can be repeated forever, it does
not run any risk in practice from any race of creatures hungry for slime in the outer space.
Of course, it is useless to put themselves unnecessarily at risk. If we seek only to perpetuate the legacy of the Earth, rather than come into contact with another civilization during the lifetime of our species, there is a way to avoid the problem: do our
tag a kind of awakening interplanetary. We program the unit to remain silent so long as it receives from Earth communications at regular intervals (like pressing "snooze" on a clock). The day he finds that the world is silent for, say, 500 years, it starts
up.
Such a machine seems absurd, and physicists with whom this was discussed did not agree on whether or not we have the technology to build a sufficiently robust and energy efficient to survive of such duration. I had dinner a few weeks ago with plasma physicists
who thought it would be possible today, provided that funding is granted. Others consider that we do not yet know-how – most admit they could acquire as and when the work – but recognize that the device does not violate any laws of physics. Anyway, a group
of scientists of the most serious has already begun to address the problems posed by the development of a beacon transmitting signals in the long
