The civil military abyss

The statements of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, ISI Director Ahmed Shuja Pasha, and the federation, which they submitted before the Supreme Court on controversial memogate scandal, indicate that the civilian government and the
military leadership are not on the same page.

Some political pundits, who earlier have doubts of accepting the claims of Mansoor Ijaz, the US-based businessman, are required to rethink their assessment, as certain new information has come to reveal.

The recent replies submitted before the apex court divulged sharp differences of opinions between the military leadership and the civilian government. In quite an expected move, the federation challenged the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to hear the
case, upholding that Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari have no connections to the secret memogate scandal.

The federation observed before the court that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, comprising of the numerous political parties, was investigating the matter thoroughly. It believes that the parliamentary panel is an impartial body to probe
the matter.

The apex court was also informed about the article published in ‘The Independent’, a UK-based daily, in which Mansoor Ijaz claimed that ISI Director Ahmed Shuja Pasha paid visits to Arab leaders, seeking their permission to remove the PPP-led government.

On the other hand, the duo military men in their replies submitted with the court, stated that they were convinced with the evidences provided by Mansoor Ijaz against the former US ambassador, Hussain Haqqani.

They asked the Supreme Court to summon Mansoor Ijaz to present the electronic data of his cell phones and personal computers. Kayani believes that it was a conspiracy hatched against the army.

At the same time, the political circles are speaking different tones. Bushra Gohar, the MNA from Awami National Party (ANP), categorically called for getting resignation of the ISI Director, Ahmed Shuja Pasha, to clear himself from the charges levelled by
Mansoor Ijaz in the fresh spate.

The issue approaches a climax, as a nine-member bench of the Supreme Court sought replies whom it considers fit for authentication. No one knows who will be come out flourishing in the wrap up.

One can hopes that the true picture of the story will soon come to light and any conspiracy to subvert the civilian set up and national integrity will be thwarted.
