Monday, December 19th, 2011 3:16:22 by Faisal FarooqAfaq Ahmed once again out of jail
An imprisonment concludes with in, bringing another tension to the port city of Karachi. Chief Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H), Afaq Ahmed, having been detained for the last seven years and eight months, ultimately freed on the instructions of the
Sindh High Court (SHC). He had been set free earlier, but was apprehended again under maintenance of Public Order Law in the city.
The decision made the policy of political victimization futile in this Afaq’s case, who was in imprisonment and facing trial after trail in the several charges of kidnapping and murders cases for more than last seven years. He was arrested back in 2004 when
pro-MQM government of General Pervez Musharraf was in the power.
His release, at last, indicates the independence of judiciary that it gained after a lengthy struggle against the power corridors. The prosecution failed to provide enough evidences against MQM-H’s chief that led to his release.
The SHC issued the orders under the aforementioned rulings, asking the authorities concerned to set free Afaq Ahmed. Many people are in fear to the reprisal of violence of the 90s, if the current ethnic aggression in the metropolis city is a throwback to
the 80s.
The latest development will have some measures of impact on Karachi’s shaky peace, a city that is separated in many ethnic and linguistic factions.
Internal strife within groups of the MQM had all but destruction of the city is the other part of the picture. Most of the brutality came to an end after a military action in the second government of Benazir Bhutto.
The entire scenario changed when one fraction of the party received support of General Pervez Musharraf, while the other all but devastated.
The court categorically stated that Pakistan is a civilized country and there are no terms for illegal confinement beyond a certain period of time in spite of alleged reservations about maintaining the peace.
The MQM-H has similar right to participate in practical politics as any party else. They are mulling to showcase their powers through staging rallies in order to prepare themselves for the upcoming general elections.
Pakistan’s security forces need to realize that an inflammable situation me be arousing. The only thing to determine is whether MQM-H chief will prove to be the fire or not.
