British Telecom sues Google Android over patent misuse
Monday, December 19th, 2011 6:01:25 by Awais KhanApple and Microsoft are not the only ones claiming search engine giant, Google, has violated patents they own. Telecommunication operator, British Telecom (BT), have filed a lawsuit in the United States against the company which has been benefiting from
their inventions on Android and services like Google Maps, Google + or their own search engine.
BT believes that Google infringed six patents owned that affected search systems and telecommunications. A representative of Google has said they will vigorously defend the charge and stated that the claims are unfounded.
Florian Mueller, specializes in the Foss Patents blog, believes that if Google loses these lawsuits and pay licenses, they will have to change their policy on Android’s free distribution. BT will be pitted directly against Google, unlike Apple who led their
lawsuits against manufacturers of mobile phones who use Google’s operating system, such as Samsung or HTC.
In one of these lawsuits, Apple claims that in 2008, BT acquired patents that can be used on portable computers. The demand comes after BT’s announcement that Google bought Motorola Mobility, a purchase that is currently being investigated by the European
Union.
BT argues that the initiative seeks "just compensation" and to prevent Google continue "to benefit from their inventions, without just compensation."
Google has moved to defend the Android operating system from a rain of litigation problems, particularly from Apple for alleged patent infringement.
In August, IBM bought the patent. The acquisition has been recorded in the Patent Office United States, but has not transcended the amount thereof. The announced purchase of Motorola Mobility will make Android another portfolio holder which brings the total
to 17,000 patents.
Google will have to support mobile phone manufacturers for alleged patent infringement who use Android. The company recently transferred patents that they own to the Taiwanese manufacturer, HTC, which would aid in protecting Apple’s demands.
