Google’s future in Mobile computing: Will they survive the future of smartphone competition? – Part 2
Monday, December 19th, 2011 12:56:20 by Usman KhalidOn the flip side of the coin, Nokia just squandered their market share over the years. They were the market leaders at time but their approach at the market was not proactive after the release of the original iPhone.
Although the iPhone was not such a monster for Nokia and Sony Ericsson but it changed the market trend a great deal. Had they plunged into the smartphone industry at the right time three, years back, they might not have seen such drastic times.
Nokia depended on Symbian OS even in the smartphone category. Perhaps, to them smartphone tech meant only a touch screen. However, that was not the case. Now realizing the true nature of the competition they have joined hands with Microsoft and their Windows
Phone unit but still the success of their handhelds is to be seen.
Will Nokia survive the competition, is to be seen in the future however; their fiercest competition is ahead of them.
Sony has purchased Ericsson’s shares in the joint venture, Sony Ericsson, and their manifesto is to concentrate on the smartphone industry only. They have contracted with Android and the Ice Cream Sandwich is about to decorate their Xperia line.
Google should learn some lessons from these examples and should accept the fact, hands down, that Apple is the market leader in terms of innovation. However, they should change their strategy to compete with Apple as well; it should be proactive.
Producing a new OS with mere tweaks is not going to work for Google, with more Apple products coming in the future. They have to start tabula rasa, from scratch. Their new operating system should come with something that takes the mobile computing to a whole
another level. They are capable of it and it’s about time that they should do it.
