Parliamentary Committee on National Security seeks balance sheet of terror fight

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security sought a detailed report on what Pakistan has gained and lost in the war against terror, as Islamabad reviews its ties with Washington.

“The parliamentary body directed the ministries of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Defence to maintain a balance sheet of Pakistan’s war on terror.

The National Security Committee of Parliament is, at present, reviewing country’s role in the war on terror besides investigating the controversial memogate issue.

The ministries had been asked to collect data of aids and compensation that Pakistan has received as a front line ally of the United States in the war on terrorism.

The committee also raised a question about the use of Pakistan’s air space by the NATO forces. The authorities concerned were asked to prepare a report on what Pakistan could seek for allowing the allied forces in Afghanistan to use its air space.

The NSC also directed the ministries to examine the pacts among various countries to use of air spaces particularly for the war purposes. The committee was of the view that Pakistan should demand charges for the use of its air space.

The body also called for a detailed review of what Pakistan achieved for allowing NATO to use its territory for supplies.

Earlier on, Minister for Communication Arbab Alamgir Khan stated that the country borne Rs 40 billion loss in terms of damage to infrastructure.

“The Ministry of Finance was tasked with evaluating the gain and loss for allowing the NATO containers to use our highways for supplies”. The panel has also sought details of projects being funded from the money earned through NATO supply charges.
