The Supreme Court Monday resumed the hearing of controversial memogate, which ignited waves in Pakistan’s politics, seeking reply of President Asif Ali Zardari within three days.
A nine-member bench of the Supreme Court, which met under the chair of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, sought the replies of remaining parties whether the petitions are acceptable or not after the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez
Kayani, DG ISI Ahmed Shuja Pasha, Mansoor Ijaz and Hussain Haqqani submitted their replies.
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, during the course of hearing, slammed the ministers’ press conference against the verdict of apex court.
The CJP asked the Attorney General, “Court orders were reticulated in former minister’s press conference. Was it governmental action or minister’s individual act? What is government’s point of view on it?”
The SC also asked the Prime Minister to submit his reply that what action he took against the cabinet members who criticized the court’s decision on establishing a commission to probe the memogate.
It is worth highlighting here that Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, Babar Awan, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Syed Khurshid Shah held a joint news conference, at the Press Information Department (PID), criticizing the court’s
decision over the secret memogate issue.
The court released a warning to the Attorney General, asking him to submit a written report over the federation’s stance in this regard. In its view, the PM should have taken notice of the issue, as the PID was used to scorn the apex court.
Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry also observed that Asma Jehangir even did not point out finger over the contempt of court. On which, Asma Jehangir, the Hussain Haqqani’s counsel, prayed before the court that she did not see the said news-conference. She was of
the opinion that strict action should be taken against such contempt of court incident.
Advocate Tariq Asad and Barrister Zafarullah, the two petitioners of the memogate case, observed before the court that the case could be heard on the basis of public significance.
The CJP stated that President Asif Ali Zardari did not disassociate him from the memogate that means he is considered as acceptance of charges. The hearing of the case has been adjourned till December 2011.
