CNG to banned in public transport – Pakistan oil and gas sector update

ISLAMABAD: After failing to secure the quality of equipment powered by natural gas, cylinders and accessories automotive, the oil and gas regulatory authority (OGRA) has recommended to prohibit the use of CNG in public transport.

One of the most senior officials from OGRA said the recommendation was necessary decision in light of the growing CNG system in accidents involving public transport. The controller recognizes the main cause of the damage to the growing number of incidents was
the use of low-quality accessories.

“The team is headed by the Ogra chairman who will personally ensure that CNG filling, pressure and fitting in the vehicles are in accordance with prescribed standards,” it said.

Occuring on Friday morning, a member of the association CNG explained this step as a way to hide OGRA’s own flaws and malfunctions.

He said that almost all of the compressed natural gas stations have obtained certificates of fitness from experts/experienced professionals approved by the HDIP OGRA.

“How can one check the quality of fittings in all vehicles arriving at a station,” a CNG station owner in Islamabad said. “Besides, it is the responsibility of Ogra and the HDIP to set up CNG checking labs across the country.”

On the other side of the coin, there will be certainly an increase in public transport fares if the transporters were forced to switch to gasoline or diesel. The actions can increase the already high inflation in this sector.

At the same time, the Assembly reviewed Pakistan compressed natural gas and oil ministry measures of safety equipment for vehicles powered by natural gas at a meeting chaired by the Minister of Petroleum Ijaz Chaudhry.

The Assembly agreed to launch an awareness campaign for consumers which ask them to test equipment and cylinders of compressed natural gas for their own safety.

The commission will also be conducting random searches of vehicles to not allow CNG refilling of vehicles having sub standard CNG kits/equipments. The move from OGRA will only add to the problems of the public as the implementation remains the biggest question
of them all.
