Chaudhry Nisar threatens to boycott upcoming sessions of security committee

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, on Tuesday threatened that it might boycott next meeting of the parliamentary committee on national security if the government did not entertain their recommendations on the controversial Memogate issue.

At a press conference outside the Parliament House,  the Leader of Opposition in National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan urged the government to call upon a joint session of parliament, as had been promised
by the Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani earlier this month.

“If the government does not entertain our recommendations pertaining to the issue, we might not attend the committee’s next meeting,” warned Nisar while talking to the media reporters yesterday.

The national security committee will hold its third meeting on Wednesday (today) on the memo saga embroiling former Pakistan ambassador to US Hussain Haqqani and the ailing Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari. In Wednesday’s meeting of the committee,
senator Ishaq Dar is expected to share his party’s point of view on the issue.

Nisar said that the PM had promised to discuss the memo issue in a joint sitting of Parliament after Ashura but it has been two weeks after Ashura and the government is in no mood to convene a joint parliamentary session.

“The government is dragging its feet on the burning issues which apparently are widening the gap between the civilian government and the military leadership,” said Nisar adding the government does not seem serious about its promise. The Opposition
Leader has got the feeling from the prolonged ongoing session of the Senate.

Nisar also revealed that PML-N’s counsel on memo case has received threats to stay away from the hearings on the case, being heard in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

“Our lawyers pleading for the murky scandal in the court are under immense pressure, as they were being threatened to stay away from the hearings,” Nisar said.

He however remained tightlipped when asked about the details of the threats PML-N’s legal advisor has been receiving. Earlier the leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Sharif, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a judicial inquiry into
the Memo scandal.
