A brief study on how to tell if someone is lying

A growing nose is probably the best way to find out if some one’s telling a truth or not but unfortunately we do not have many Pinocchio’s out there. However, there are certain ways to determine if some ones trying to make a fool of yourself by hiding the
fact.

Different experts from around the world have streamlined certain points which can actually identify if someone is spewing falsehoods. One of the basic ways to do so is to try and have a long conversation with the person. This will help you determine his
tone of voice and how he speaks.

To have a conversation of that nature you can start by asking simple questions you already know the answers of, like asking him about his name, address and other questions depending on who you are asking them to.

On receiving the answers to the mentioned questions now you can streamline what kind of a talker the person in question is. You can then switch to the real questions and if his manner changes suddenly from calm to nervous or sparkling to soft, there are
chances that he is hiding the truth inside.

The above mentioned procedure has been recommended by the retired FBI crime analyst and FBI criminal profiler Gregg McCrary at Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Jeffrey Hancock is an associate professor at Cornell University as he studies online lying. He suggests, “In my research, I’ve discovered that when people fib about themselves, they tend to use
I and me less often than people who are being truthful. Instead, they’ll speak about themselves in the third person (“This is a girl who loves to ski”) or even truncate their language (“Really into listening to jazz”)—anything to give themselves
psychological distance from the lie”.

Another way to identify if someone is hiding the truth is to ask them a question about their whereabouts in the past and they will come out with quick and rapid answers. However, if you ask the same question to most people about what they were doing last
week they will pause and think and will not fire their answers in.

Julia Chung an assistant principal briefed, “When I call a child into my office and he seems totally rehearsed—there’s zero hesitation before he answers a question—well, that’s a dead giveaway”.

It is also observed that a liar would repeatedly perform random physicals action that seems unnecessary, retying the shoelace, cleaning the glasses or dusting the table he or she may be laying. The guilt inside her makes her restless and she performs such
actions. Barbara Mitchell a relationship therapist explained, “The guilt and anxiety make her restless. That can be particularly true if she is lying to somebody she loves. When a person fibs to a traffic cop, she won’t necessarily fidget a lot. But if she
is deceiving her husband, she won’t be able to sit still”.

Another common behaviour seen by the potential liars is that they repeatedly use the phrases to emphasise on the strength of their blamelessness like, “to tell you the truth” and “to be perfectly honest”.  Suddenly religion is involved to prove their innocence,
“I Swear on God” and other religious swears as Pierre Corneille stated, “A liar is always lavish of oaths”.
