On the December 20, 2010 the U.S. Senate ended 17 years of a controversial law. Indeed, it adopted controversial a bill, abolishing the rule which requires the military to hide their sexual orientation for fear of being written off. President Barack Obama enacted the
text. Though the repeal of the directive was passed, the entry into force of the law, however, took several months.
17 years old, the directive "do not ask, do not tell" (do not ask, do not say anything), implemented under President Bill Clinton in 1993, opened the door to a career military to homosexuals, provided, however, for them to hide their sexual preference.
According to sources Association, more than 13,000 men and women were excluded from the ranks of the U.S. Army under this Directive.
A campaign promise kept!
The President of the United States had promised during his 2008 presidential campaign, to end this "law of silence."
Violating his eyes the human rights, Barack Obama had found the law "unjust and unwise."
Despite this promise, many leftist organizations criticized the President to sit back on this subject since the beginning of his term.
He also added that "well, thousands of others will not be forced to live a lie in order to serve the country they love."
In May last year, the House of Representatives had approved the abolition of this law, slipped into a large project finance bill for the Pentagon, but the Senate had rejected it in the previous week.
Elected officials of the two sides had then filed a new bill self that is to say that was not inserted into another text. The House of Representatives had approved the new law the last Wednesday of the date, by 250 votes against 175.
The repeal of the directive was finally passed by the Senate by 65 votes against 31.
“Today the Senate has made ??a historic step towards the end of a policy that undermines our national security and violates the ideals defended by our men and women in uniform and for which they risk their lives, "said President Obama and reacted in a statement
Saturday.
Acquired from the vote, the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said the administration would work with “caution, but resolution method "to implement the new provisions allowing gay soldiers to serve openly.”
With homosexuals in the army, one may find it harder to avoid the rising stereotypes about the military being gay, or will it?
