Estranged senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Safdar Abbasi endorsed the demand of opposition parties for new elections in the country, saying the government has no other option due to its worse performance.
“The incumbent government is creating problems not only for itself but for the masses, system, democracy and other state institutions as well,” Abbasi said while talking to the media in Parliament Wednesday.
He stated that it would be appropriate for the government to announce holding of fresh elections in consultation with other parties.
To a query, the Senator said that the government failed to provide any relief to the masses in the last four years, adding that situation would be worsen if the rulers complete their term in the same manner.
“Why the government wants to complete its term? Has it no concern about the problems being faced by the masses”?
In his view, the party suffered bad reputation after alliance with PML-Q. Presently people are highly perturbed due to price hike and unemployment, he added.
He said that the government was not functioning according t the vision of its Shaheed (martyred) leaders. “Certainly the workers will inquire about the killers of Benazir Bhutto from the party heads in the next elections,” he maintained.
To a query regarding increasing popularity of Imran Khan, Abbasi said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf would also affect the PPP in Punjab and other parts of the country.
He maintained that the emergence of Imran Khan on the political scene was a good omen for PPP in the beginning but now the ruling party is suffering more damage by his repute.
“People’s Party must be aware that Khan will also scratch it along with PML-N,” he said adding that the PPP leaders were still in misunderstanding that PTI would only hurt PML-N.
He further said that Shah Mehmood Qureshi had consulted him before leaving the party. “I suggested him to struggle remaining in the party. However, he has preferred to join Tehreek-e-Insaf,” he said.
