A look at Zack Snyder’s influence on modern culture
Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 5:18:54 by Musa AfridiThe director of iconic films such as The Watchmen and 300
in recent years have not only made him a household name but his work has impacted modern culture.
There is no denying the fact that film, television and the internet have a profound effect and influence the culture of not only their own nations, but also the world. The artists behind the films usually go on to make reputations for themselves as visionaries.
Directors such as Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather trilogy), Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Night) and monsieur Zack Snyder who has been at the helm of some truly extraordinary motion pictures.
Yet what separates these directors from the rest is how their projects tend to dictate or influence the culture and the way the world thinks. Take the example of Inception, which made the masses rethink and re-imagine what dreams were.
While the director behind Inception had a more meaningful, philosophical effect on those who experienced the film, Zack Snyder had a greater effect on popular culture.
One well reputed critic labeled The Watchmen as one of the most important films in recent history. The movie itself grossed over $185-million worldwide yet the story itself was one that left audiences asking a number of important questions. The
most important was the ‘who watches the watchmen’ analogy that could be applied to the current political climate.
In the end however, Snyder’s most important work to date has to be 300. ‘Important’ in the sense that it was interesting how so many of the film’s moments became part of near everyday conversation.
The ‘this is Sparta!’ line has been reinvented and rephrased so many times to so many different situations, ranging from sports (this is Barca!) to many other memes.
While that was just one moment in the movie, there were many more that left an entire generation of movie goers wishing they were part of Leonidis’s 300.
His style of slow motion action sequences and ability to stay true to the original sources while adapting them to the cinema without losing its integrity or disappointing the true fans of the material in question.
