Enough is Enough

Yousaf Raza Gilani’s speech should be taken as better late than never, instead of too late the hero.
The essence of the premier’s address is that lessons of democracy, whether be it in the Eastern Wing of the erstwhile Pakistan or the Western Wing, which is present day Pakistan, will have to be learnt and digested the hard way.
Only a few days ago, we mourned December 16, secession of Bangladesh. What exactly happened in 1971?
The best and simplest of doctrines of analogy is offered by a seasoned journalist goes that there was once upon a time a political party, called Awami League, we can take it as out equivalent of a PPP or a PML-N; the army decided to go to war with the Awami
League. And the army lost. Lesson: nor army is in the world can fight the political forces of its own country.
Another writer stated, close to 75, 000 plus Pakistan military officers surrendered to General Jagjit Singh Aurrora, who became master and lord over our troops. It was not until Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto singed the Simla agreement and got our soldiers
released from Indian custody.
So after 40 years down the road, is the military leadership ready for another showdown with the political forces of whatever left of the country. The premier’s speech is also trailer as to what is about to come if without unforeseen encumbrance.
President Zardari is drafting a similar speech for Gharhi Khuda Buksh on December 27, the death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, to overshadow the December 25th rally of Imran Khan. Many people have been going and about the level of explosiveness
can only expect from the president’s speech.
But the premier’s address shows that caution has been thrown to the wind. The interesting dilemma is that, Gilani in his earlier speech had predicted that if the present dispersion goes, democracy will not return in their lifetime.
Look, an inward looking dictatorship disconnected from the western world with friend like China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, there will be no external pressure to reinvent the democratic setup. Democracy could be as good as it never happened earlier.
