Is General Kayani’s statement enough to dispose threats?

A dwarf statement from Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, is not enough to decrease the mounting tensions in the country’s polity, as military has so power influence in politics.

However, the army chief’s statement that military is not planning to come into the power is a welcoming gesture. It will also lead to some decline in the mounting tensions between the two institutions.

The statement came a day after Prime Minster Syed Yousf Raza Gilani candidly expressed his fears, saying that conspiracies being hatched to send his government home. It shows that the military will not take risk for making a coup at the specific stage.

Many people will have sentiments against the government, but very few will even think for a military takeover in the country. Although the statement faded away the threats that the military will not directly takeover the system, there are the ways the army
interfered the demotic process in the past.

It is no secret more that the army establishment is not happy with President Asif Ali Zardari and it could force him to resign while permitting the government to complete its term as per the constitution.

In such case, disowning the military coup is not the same thing as promising to be submissive to civilian government. The civilian setup in some way accepted its weakness, when in an affidavit; it submitted to the Supreme Court, the Defence Ministry stated
that it had no control over the army.

So, the army chief’s statement does nothing to dispose the threat of army’s intervention. In the civilized democracy, the government will not have to worry about the army, which should be under its command, just like any other institution.

Conversely, the government will have to squeeze its control back gradually. It will be started by standing firm on the inglorious memogate scandal. If all the claims of Mansoor Ijaz are true, than those of the other, mentioned in the transcripts, should
be investigated thoroughly.

Moreover, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) must be more unwrap about the challenges it is facing and not prevaricate on problems when it needs to take a position. In such move, the premier’s speech was most appropriate and timely step. One can hopes that
the PPP will now find its vice which held it in good lieu in during the dictatorial regimes.
