Warrior (2011) Review
Saturday, December 24th, 2011 3:38:48 by Musa AfridiThe Rocky of this generation or just another forgettable film?
These days if any film goes past the two hour mark then it goes without saying that: a) it is looking for an Academy Award, seeing how popcorn flicks tend to end in one-and-a-half hours and b) is taking a relatively huge risk.
So when I sat down and started up the movie and saw that the run time was two hours and nineteen minutes, I was expecting to be let down by the end of Director, Gavin O’Connor’s latest film. Yet, after a slow start Warrior really captured my attention and
did not let go till the very end, after which I wanted more.
The movie explores the distant broken relationship between a father (Nick Nolte) and his two sons (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton). The reasons for the strained relations between them forms the crux of the story and is revealed a little a time, leaving movie
goers wondering.
To keep things brief, anyone who watches this movie will not be left wanting in terms of story, character building and superb performances put in by all the stars. One can expect a few Oscar nominations for the cast and crew when the time comes.
As for the action, well Tom Hardy’s character, Tommy Conlon, steals the show with his brash, aggressive no holds barred style. In fact, it was his fights that everyone will be looking forward to. That is not to say his brother is any less exciting.
Almost as if the two were Yin and Yang, his brother Brendan Conlon, is more of a technical fighter focusing on submission moves and able to take more of a beating than anyone thought possible.
The true brilliance of the film however, and Gavin O’Connor needs to be commended for this, is how the entire film feels like an event. From the reasons for every character needing to fight, to the relationships between the characters and even the way the
entire tournament is set up and the movie shot, it is a deeply engaging ride.
Warrior does for MMA exactly what Rocky did for boxing and for that alone is a must see.
