International Business Machine (IBM) released the stats of Christmas Day purchases mostly made on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2011. The most amazing fact that mesmerised even IBM was this year’s statistics of online shopping. Since the 2008 recession, the
online shopping trend had shifted steeply to traditional brick and mortar transactions.

In a survey, it was revealed that the Americans were shifting back to traditional ways of shopping because the public is not willing to pay for shipment charges slapped on online shopping.

In the recent events, it has become clear that the confidence of the US public, especially belonging to the area of where economy is comparatively stable, is making its way back in willingness to make online transactions.

Moreover, the astonishing fact is the increasing trend toward online shopping via mobile devices. Among many tablets and smartphones purchased these holidays, many were used to purchase commodities online through mobile applications.

The platform used the most was Apple’s iOS. It has been only two years since Apple launched its tablet computer called the iPad. However, the slate has been selling like hot cakes since and has captured almost 75 percent of the tablet market.

iPad made overall 7 percent online sales only on Christmas Day. That means that seven percent of all the sales on December 25th were done by Apple’s flagship tablet. Moreover, with 6.4 percent transactions, iPhone, regardless of model type, was
second and Android, both tablets and smartphones, came 3rd with 5 percent share.
