A beleaguered but defiant President Asif Ali Zardari assured his followers that neither he would resign nor he would let anyone damage the democracy and would ensure that the Constitution remains supreme.
The assurance came from the Pakistan President on the fourth anniversary of the death of his wife and former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was shot dead during an election campaign at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi in 2007.
Zardari, who is facing perhaps the greatest threat to his government, said that he would not step down regardless of numerous crises building around him.
"We want to make history, not headlines. I tell you, politics — which we have left to our prime minister and the cabinet — is the art of the possible," said Zardari while addressing a rally of more than 50,000 of supporters at Garhi Khuda Bux. "But making
a nation is the art of the impossible and I believe I’m doing the art of the impossible," he added.
Zardari said that Pakistan People’s Party will always fight for democracy and not for seats adding that he would never let his people fight for his sake.
In his fiery speech, the president said that democracy was still in its infancy in the country, and it will take time to grow stronger.
“We will only fight for democracy,” he said, adding “I am a constitutional president, added President Zardari, and (Gilani) is a constitutional prime minister.”
He said that in a bid to nurture the democracy, he had handed over all powers to the Prime Minister. He urged the supporters and part workers to remain committed and united and not to be dissuaded by the temporary challenges the PPP government is going through.
Zardari was all praise for Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for remaining committed to the country as well as to the party.
He also paid rich tributes to the Bhutto family who has sacrificed its four precious members for the sake of democracy.
