The Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) has decided to summon Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United States (US) Husain Haqqani in January to grill him about the inglorious memogate scandal.
According to the media reports, Haqqani will face the parliamentary panel next month, as members want to question him along with the army chief and DG ISI. This time, the body wanted a real show of power after questions are being
raised about its legal jurisdiction and status to probe the controversial memogate issue.
On the other hand, PCNS Chairman Senator Raza Rabbani wants to conclude the investigations into the scandal by mid February at all cost as he along with seven senators will be retired in March.
More than half members of 16 members PCNS are senators. The term of eight members will expire in March and they include Raza Rabbani, Ishaq Dar, Babar Awan, Wasim Sajjad, Professor khurshid, Abdul Rahim Khan Mandokhel, Shahid Bugti
and Mir Israr Ullah Zehri.
As the committee formally launched a probe into the memo issue, tough queries are being prepared by the members for the former ambassador, Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and DG ISI Lt. Gen. Shuja Pasha.
In its previous sitting, the panel had sought record of the affidavits submitted to the Supreme Court by Hussain Haqqani, army chief, DG ISI, the federation and by Mansoor Ijaz, the main character behind the entire drama.
In his reply submitted to the court, Haqani had rejected any involvement in the controversial memogate saying he, the prime minister or the president had nothing to do with it.
In his counter affidavit submitted in response to the statements of army chief and DG ISI, Haqqani said Pakistan’s sovereignty was not so weak as to come under threat by a memo that was shrouded in controversy.
Haqqani said he had no knowledge of a meeting between Mansoor Ijaz and DG ISI Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha.
He termed Mansoor Ijaz’s meeting with DG ISI as a ‘mysterious’ act, saying it had become necessary to know the complete record and details of the meeting.” Even the recipient of the memo did not deem the document as reliable,” he
added.
