As pressure is mounting on the government by the military establishment and opposition parties, some key PPP leaders second the holding of general elections next year instead in 201.
Although the proposal is given by some important party figures, however, they all want Senate’s election to be held first in March at all cost, a media outlet claimed.
Although Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and other top leaders of the party had stated several times during recent critical days that the government would complete its constitutional term, a group of cool minded politicians who want the general elections
to be held in next year, gave logical reasons for their recommendation.
According to them, the party cannot stick out against the military establishment and other forces for so long. They added that these politicians also warned for grouping and breakage in the party if situation remained same.
In their view, more people could leave the party like Sardar Asif Ahmed Ali with the passage of time.
According to them, establishment and the opposition would continue to increase the pressure on the government that could further damage the credibility of the incumbent government and the party as well. They believe that the party will go in the next polls
with more weaknesses in 2013 instead it is held in next year.
Although these leaders want elections next year but they have same opinion about the Senate polls like other party members have.
The whole party wants to get majority in the Upper House before general elections to strengthen its political position in parliament. The party would be on strong footing even if it failed to get good numbers in the National Assembly in polls.
The group was also observing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s fresh but silent understanding with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) that is already demanding for early polls. Political experts say if the PPP will insist to hold the elections in 2013 then
it will be only having support of Awami National Party (ANP) that will likely not to agree in this regard.
Earlier on, President Zardari’s close friend and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had already said that the elections could be held in next year and he was working on a formula to convince the all political parties to make a way out from ongoing crisis.
