Pakistan, which is passing through worst economic and governance issues, still manages endless political thespians. A country needs a thriller to concentrate on current happenings around the corner. The latest political drama was done by Information Minister,
Dr. Firdaus Ashiq Awan with howling mode.
In an unparalleled and dramatic move, she tendered her resignation from the ministry in the meeting of the federal cabinet, held in Karachi, to mark the birth anniversary of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The showdown between the premier and information minister was inimitable in a sense that never before has such a high-pitched live drama was observed.
While addressing a news conference, the minister with sobbing face observed, “If there are issues about my performance I am resigning from my post.” However, she stated that she will remain loyal and sincere with the party and the leadership.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani along with other cabinet members was completely caught off-guard when she tendered her resignation.
Apart from that she had taken back her resignation after the premier intervened into the matter. However, the question is that what prompted her to do so at this point. It is unclear whether it was a pre-emptive measure against those who don’t want to see
her to hold the information ministry.
Her appointment as an information minister also came a surprise, in February 2011. Many leaders in the party have failed to understand who influenced President Asif Ali Zardari preferring her over many talented members.
She has been facing severe criticism within and outside the party for her failure to efficiently defend the government in the infamous memogate issue.
All stated and done, the minister’s resignation had fully demonstrated the state of affairs under which the various portfolios and departments officiating. The premier should take notice of the matter at the earliest, allowing her to pick up of a team of
her choice to produce the desired results.
Meanwhile, the PM should also formulate a monitoring mechanism about the functioning of the important departments. It is difficult to imagine that the dream of good governance will be translated into a reality without check and balance.
