Terror war cash rewards stuns parliamentary panel

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security wondered over what Pakistan was getting from the United States (US) and NATO/ISAF against its services and sacrifices in war on terror.

A member of the parliamentary body briefed the media saying Pakistan is getting minimum financial benefits against its strategic support to the US/NATO and sacrificing soldiers and civilians in the war.

The meeting of the committee was held at the Parliament House with Senator Raza Rabbani in the chair to discuss Pakistan’s agreements with the US/NATO, coalition forces attack on Slala Check-Post and memogate issue.

Secretary Defence Lt. Gen. (Retd) Naeem Khalid Lodhi presented the documents of Pakistan’s nine agreements with the US/NATO and ISAF in connection with the war against militancy. In its previous meeting, the committee had directed the Defence Ministry to
provide this record.

Members of the parliamentary panel shocked to know the amount Pakistan was being paid by the allied forces under these agreements.

After the in-camera meeting, Chairman PCNS Senator Raza Rabbani told media that officials of the Ministry of Finance are directed to brief the panel about the impact of Pak-US agreements on country’s economy.

He said that the committee was also working on drafting its recommendations for change in the defence and foreign policy. “These recommendations will be presented in the Parliament but no timeframe can be set for this purpose,” Rabbani held.

He went on to say that the body was also briefed about the Pentagon’s investigation report about the NATO’s attack on Slala Check-Post in Mtohmand Agency.

Members of the PCNS were agreed to summon Hussain Haqqani, the army chief and DG ISI in the memogate scandal. “The proposal was presented by some members after questions were raised over the powers and legal authority of the committee by the PML-N in the
court and the media, they added.

The chairman contended that the panel could summon anyone as per the requirement.

The committee was also surprised to know that the Defence Ministry never shared the details of these nine agreements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a participant of the meeting informed.
