‘We want to live in history and not in headlines’: President Zardari
Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 9:13:02 by Sajjad HussainAll eyes were on Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on 27th December, the 4th anniversary of Pakistan’s first female Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who was assassinated outside Liaqat Bagh Rawalpindi on the same day in 2007. Hundreds of thousands of
mourners and Pakistan People’s Party workers thronged the town which they revere for all Bhuttos, from Pakistan’s first democratically elected premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, to his sons – Shahnawaz Bhutto and Murtaza Bhutto, all of whom died unnatural death,
lie buried here.
Expectations. Apprehensions. Expectation of supposedly zealous Pakistan People’s Party followers to hear a fiery speech. And the apprehensions of the far-sighted leaders and cadres that any angry outburst of the president Asif Ali Zardar, the co-chairman
of the PPP, may result into a precarious political turmoil, and potentially a fight between the institutions.
With many speculations that were rife in the political circles, the ever increasing political pundits have their set of predictions to make. Nonetheless, much to the chagrin of doomsayers, the president chose to strike a conciliatory note instead of choosing
the path of confrontation.
While he was clear about his stance of protecting the constitution, and through it the federation. And the means to fight this battle was not agitation. For him, and his party, the battle would be in democratic manner. We will fight any evil eye that is
a threat to the federation, but our way will be that of Aung San Suu Kyi (Nobel laureate and Myanmar’s democracy leader).”
For the president, as speech went on, it was the prime minister who would take charge of everything. Throwing his weight behind him and putting every responsibility on the prime minister’s shoulder, the president said the party wants to make history, not
headlines.
“We want to live in history and not in headlines. We have left politics to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and members of his cabinet.”
After an angry speech of the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani delivered in the parliament last week, referring to the conspiracies being hatched to dislodge his government, to this relatively calm address to the PPP workers, the president has – for now-
cooled the political temperature.
