A Separation is a 2011 Iranian drama film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. It features Leila Hatami, Peyman Moaadi, Shahab Hosseini, Sareh Bayat and Sarina Farhadi.
The $0.5 million budgeted movie is set in contemporary Iran and it is a drama about a dissolution of marriage. Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter but she is forced to sue for divorce when his husband refuses to travel because of
his suffering father. Nader hires a maid who later lies with Nader and the lead character realises that there is more on the line than just his marriage.
The Persian movie grossed a total of $3,100,000 in Iran and bagged $14,908,906 internationally.
The 123 minutes film received exceptional ratings and reviews. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes report that 100 percent of critics gave it positive reviews, based on 38 critics, with an average rating of 8.5 out of 10.
Metacritic gave the movie a score of 86 out of 100 based on reviews by 22 critics.
IMDB gave the film a rating of 8.6 out 10 from its 21,558 users.
Village Voice’s top critic, J. Hoberman, reported, “What’s fascinating is how the various issues — religious or practical — are played out in these two quite different families, yet always come down to irreconcilable differences between rebellious women
and their stiff-necked, controlling men.”
Marshall Fine of the Hollywood and Fine said, “A movie that continually surprises you, reminding you that the best films are the ones that deal with complex emotional truth, rather than a clichéd cinematic version of it.”
Time Out New York’s critic gave the film a rating of 5 out of 5 and praised by saying, “Getting absorbed in the film’s complex layers of procedural negotiation and domestic argument, you’ll realize that we often settle for too little from our screenplays.”
Glenn Kenny of the MSN Movies declared, “…interesting, and engaging, in both a storytelling and sociological/cultural study fashion.”
The concept of the film came from a number of personal experiences and abstract pictures which had been in Asghar Farhadi’s mind for some time. Once he decided to make the film, about a year before it premiered, it was quickly written and financed.
A Separation is an exceptional drama film and should be on everyone’s radar.
