Despite all the economic recession, this year has been a very good one the Bollywood industry, as the 120 movies released this year have racked in a total of Rs 2, 590 crore. As per the trade analysts,
this amount is enough to make up even for the huge losses that the Industry incurred in the last three years.
The trade analysts are hence considering 2011 as the best year for the Bollywood Industry thus far. Analysts told the media that the first five months were not so good this year before films like ‘Bodyguard’,
‘Ra. One’, ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘Murder 2’ and ‘Don 2’ turned the tables
“The moolah came in from all directions and the net collection at the domestic box office alone is about Rs 1,740cr. However, the revenue mostly came from 15-20 major movies,” says trade analyst Joginder
Tuteja.
“We’ve gone back to making more films for single screens and the masses. The first five months were not that good, but we made up splendidly,” adds trade pundit Atul Mohan.
Shahrukh Khan’s Hindi science fiction film ‘RA.One’, which was released on October 26, 2011, earned almost (US$45.6 million) worldwide as a result to which it became the second highest-grossing Bollywood
film worldwide. However, one of the analysts reckons the film could have earned even more in the theatres, if the makers hadn’t sold the satellite and music rights.
“The satellite and music rights and other subsidies were also a major source of the revenue. In fact, movies such as ‘RA.One’ could have made more money in theatres, but then since the makers sold satellite
rights, a large chunk of the audience just waited for the movies to come on air,” adds trade analyst Komal Nahta.
Salman Khan’s ‘Bodyguard’ helped the industry a lot as well since the action-love film collected an amount of (US$43. 51 million) worldwide. Other blockbusters this year were ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘Desi
Boyz’, ‘Murder 2’, ‘Rock Star’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’, ‘Delly Belly’ and ‘Don 2’.
There are also some great films coming up in 2012 but let’s see Bollywood can earn more than this year in 2012.
