Pakistan and India, the two neighboring countries with a history of hostility and conflict, are moving in a right direction to stave off future military and nuclear disputes.
The two countries, the two nuclear powers, got together at the sixth meeting on nuclear Confidence Building Measure (CMBs), in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, extending the strength of their previous compacts to reduce the menace of accidents relating
to atomic arms for another five years.
In order to avert any incident, the two sides frequently exchanged list of atomic installations under the CMB’s agreement. Furthermore, they inked agreement not to attack each other’s atomic stations.
Pakistan, during the dialogues, also gave a proposal to shift heavy weaponry 30 kilometers away from the Line of Control (LoC), the military-commanded partition between the two parts of Kashmir.
Conversely, this proposal has been rejected by the Indian officials. The offer may be a good one for maintaining peace in the region, but it will not deliver fruitful results until raft of deals framed to reduce the tensions between the two neighbors.
The Line of Control must be made absorbent to easy trade and travel across it if a structure to disperse the military altercation is to be booming.
In this way, people-to-people contact will play vital role to preserve peace along the borders. This is only done through a liberalized visa policy from the two sides. It should be make a meeting point for Pakistanis, Indians and divided Kashmiris.
The criticalness of agreements, to make sure that there is no sparking off the atomic war, cannot be underscored enough if we are to live with armaments of massive devastation in the region.
Thence, the five-year annex of a deal between the two states to lower the risk of accidents should be honored. It indicates a common thought of the massive upshots of accidental nuclear mishaps.
The recent talks in the meeting CBM meeting show a change in the hitherto dead state of affairs between Pakistan and India since Mumbai terror strikes.
The recent decision of Pakistani cabinet for awarding India MFN status, and the meetings between the foreign ministers and premiers served initial steps in this regard. It helped the two sides to resume the frozen process of dialogues, realizing the need
for mutual cooperation.
