The Coffee Tale, Part 2
Thursday, December 29th, 2011 4:13:51 by Ahmed BabarIt is however believed to be Dutch who initiated the spread of coffee in Central and South America. British introduced coffee to Jamaica in 1730, where today the world’s most famous and expensive coffee in the world is grown, in Blue Mountains.
Coffee was rapidly farmed in Brazil and Java which caused a significant downfall in world prices. Brazil was the world’s largest producer and was producing about 600,000 bags per year, which was follow by Cuba, java and Haiti each with annual production
of 350 to 450,000 bags per year. World production was calculated to reach some 2.5 million bags per year.
In Columbia, where coffee had been introduced in 1723 and its coffee industry was growing with great speed as the best quality was not available in the region. Columbia exported about five hundred thousand bags of coffee in 1905 which was doubled only in
1915.
Brazil was struggling with it’s over production of coffee as Columbian coffee became so popular with its consumers in Europe and America. Brazil supplied three- quarters of US imports with 5.6 million bags in 1914 which doesn’t look very good after five
years as it had dropped down to 4.3 million by 1919, whereas Columbia share has risen from 687,000 to 915,000 bags.
Coffee demand in 20th century was on high despite of political chaos and many other factors. In 1946 U.S coffee production went to the peak and annual per capita consumption was 19.8 pounds, double than in 1900.
The process of decolonisation during the years of Second World War, there were several newly independent nations in Africa, particularly Kenya, Uganda Rwanda and Burundi who were quite dependent on coffee export revenue.
Seattle was the place with most coffee lovers in US; it was a place with the most fast growing café culture since its birth in 1970. That culture was then quickly stretched to other nations of the world, even to the countries with their own great coffee
traditions; countries like Italy, Germany and Scandinavia were finding new pleasures in their daily coffee and were getting in to the culture brought by Seattle.
As a result of that, today it is quite easy to find good coffee in almost every main city of the world. Consumption of coffee is increasing day by day and people are spending more time in to the Coffee Shops and importantly drinking better coffee.
