Soon after the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, his youngest son Kim Jong Un has won allegiance as the new supreme head of the country. The late Kim Jong Il ruled North Korea from 1994 to 2011. Back in the day, he succeeded his father Kim Il-sung
who founded the DPRK. After spending almost seventeen years in government, Kim Jong Il, bid farewell to life on December 17, 2011.
At the long funeral ceremony of Korean leader, tens of thousands of soldiers pledged their allegiance to make his son Kim Jong Un the new supreme leader of the party. Kim Jong Un is believed to be most suitable for the position as he inherits the ideology,
leadership and courage of his father.
Furthermore, a top military officer of North Korea Kim Jong Gak announced that country’s 1.1 million soldiers "will safeguard comrade Kim Jong Un with their lives. The new leader significantly needs the military’s hand, in order to consolidate his power.
Reportedly, Kim Jong Un appeared at the memorial service in a black coat and remained silent most of the time. He was accompanied by the military and party leaders but made no public comment while watching the memorial service.
The New York Times said while questions remain whether Kim Jong Un would be able to take control or depend on caretakers or regents, at least in the public eye he didn’t seem he would share his power. Analysts would also be watching how China, North Korea’s
main ally and supporter, takes to the new leadership.
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Chung Min Lee, dean at Seoul’s Yonsei University, said from China’s perspective, its alliance with North Korea is a burdensome asset, acting as a buffer against South Korea and by extension, the United States and Japan.
"China also recognizes North Korea’s usefulness as a political bargaining chip in broader negotiations with the U.S., Japan and others," the article said.
Let’s wait and see what new changes hit North Korea in the near future.
