Pakistan ranks 43rd in the world’s ranking of published research documents
Friday, December 30th, 2011 4:52:51 by sara.anwarAccording to the findings of the worldwide scientific journal ranking (SJR), Pakistan ranks 43rd with only 6,987 published research documents in 2010 to its credit. This is alarmingly low record generated despite the fact that
Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) had realised that they needed to bolster their position in the world’s listing of research.
However, there is no denying the fact that Pakistan has progressively improved on their ranking through the persistent efforts of HEC. In 2007, Pakistan ranked the 45th with only with 3,750 publications. In 2003, it booked the 50th
standing with 1,539 research papers under its belt. Meanwhile, in 2000, Pakistan was placed 54th with 1,174 papers to its name, whereas in 1996, 893 research papers were published which landed them on the 52nd spot.
Research work is paralleled with the number of PhDs a country is producing. We, Pakistanis are trailing behind tremendously in that department, which should not be ignored even at this point in time. While comparing our national research output in 2010,
with the other Islamic countries, it has been revealed that we are lagging behind in that race too, where Turkey is leading the way with 30,594 research publications. Meanwhile, Iran closely follows with 27,510 research documents to its name.
However, the same year United States was on top with 502,804 papers followed by China with 320,800 and United Kingdom with 139,683 research documents. On the other hand, India ranked ninth worldwide.
