Rawalpindi: (Friday, December 30, 2011) Terming the government’s decision as an attempt to wipe out the local industry, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has rejected the increase of Rs.2.4 in electricity price here today.
RCCI President Jawed Akhtar Bhatti stated this while chairing a meeting held here at the Chamber on Thursday. Senior Vice President Raja Amer Iqbal, Group Leader Najam-ul-Haq, member executive committee and other members of the
chamber were also present on the occasion.
Jawed Akhtar Bhatti said that government is planning to increase the gas tariff in January. “In prevailing situation awarding MFN status to India will bulldoze the local industry,” he added. He said that business community is in the process of consultation
with other stakeholders and future strategy will be announced soon.
He said that country’s industry is already facing immense problems regarding energy crisis and recent move will further devastate the industry. “Number of sick units, unemployment and inflation will increase therefore the government must have to withdraw its
recent decision,” he added.
He demanded of the government that gas pipeline project with Iran and Turkmenistan should be completed at earliest and no foreign pressure should be entertained. He said that if the situation prevails the unfortunate day would come when foreign products will
rule our local markets. “Recent decision must be withdrawn and planned hike in gas tariffs must be taken back,” he urged.
In the backdrop of government’s recent decision to increase prices of the energy inputs, it seems the ruling lot is on a spree to falter the economy of the country. All the steps taken by the present ruler with the claim to bring
improvement has only added to the misery of the common man as well as business entrepreneurs.
If the government is to continue with presently practiced mal-economic policies, there are fewer chances of witnessing any improvement into the lives of the common people. And if, as claimed by the Prime Minister, the government
is to complete its term, and to rule the nation for one more year or so, we are destined to reach to a point of no return in leaving this country damaged beyond repairs.
