Aisha Ahad Malik causes uproar in Punjab Assembly

Lahore:  (Saturday, December 31, 2011) The Punjab Assembly observed one of the worst uproar its brief session yesterday when the speaker had to adjourn it owing to lack of quorum.

The uproar was a result of exchange of hot words and accusations between the treasury and opposition benches on the issue of providing justice to Aisha Ahad Malik, who claims to be the daughter-in-law of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz
Sharif but the latter strongly denies the claim.

The Opposition members, especially the lady members, joined the protest of Aisha Malik who had reached outside the assembly gates in the morning before the proceedings began. They kept raising slogans against the government and the chief minister, demanding
justice for Aisha.

The commotion in the House began after law minister Rana Sanaullah used, what the opposition members called, offensive remarks against Aisha Malik. The remarks of the minister came after the House had just offered Fateha for the deceased MPA Amir Hayat Rokhri
on a condolence resolution following the question hour. It was leader of the opposition Raja Riaz who let the ball rolling by inviting the speaker’s attention towards, what he termed, injustice to Aisha Ahad Malik who had been at the stairs of the assembly
building since morning and demanding justice for the alleged excesses meted out to her by police at the behest of the provincial government.

Raja Riaz, on a point of order, termed Aisha the daughter of the entire province since she happened to be the daughter of former member of this august house, Ahad Malik. He demanded the speaker take the House into confidence about the steps government had taken
to ensure justice in the light of the orders of the Lahore High Court on a suo motu by the chief justice.

Trying to make it clear that he did not want to discuss others’ domestic matters in the House, Raja Riaz said he was forced to raise the issue since it was the matter of providing justice to the daughter of the whole Punjab who was victim of police excesses
done allegedly at the behest of the provincial government. He demanded the speaker constitute a House committee to ensure justice to the daughter of a former colleague, otherwise, he warned, they would boycott the House proceedings.

However, Rana Sanaullah alleged that opposition was trying to frame a case against the chief minister out of a fabricated issue and denied her claim of being the daughter-in-law of the CM. He said Aisha had not come to the assembly building on her own, warning
the opposition members against taking the issue too far.
